DESCRIPTION: 1/2 calf, blue marbled boards, front cover of vol.I detached, all remaining hinges creased, Gilt decorative bands on spines, title in gilt lettering, some wear to heads. Red speckled edges. Occasional foxing. Bookplate on front pastedowns, ownership stamp on front free endpapers; a very nice copy.
ILLUSTRATIONS: 8 full page plate engravings, four in vol.I and four in vol.II. Inserted folding map of Rome, dated to 1885, worn.
EDITION: Second edition.
NOTES: Edward Burton (1794-1836), Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford, canon of Christ Church and rector of Ewelme, was responsible for replacing the pews in his church with open seating, a rare arrangement in that day. He was the author of several works, mainly upon early Church doctrine and Greek texts, and wrote this work following an extended post-M.A. trip to the continent.
